The Association of British Insurers is the trade body for insurance companies in the UK. It is the voice of the UK's insurance, investment and long-term savings industry. It has around 400 members, which together account for around 90% of premiums in the UK domestic market.

The Association is looking for a tax policy adviser to assist in the development and implementation of policy on issues concerning the taxation of insurance companies and financial services products.

Key responsibilities of the role will be:

- to work closely with other members of the tax team, Directorate and ABI generally to assist in the development and implementation of policy on issues concerning the taxation of insurance companies and financial services products.

- To keep members informed of and involved in policy development and to represent industry views and interests to UK Government, European bodies and other relevant parties.


Principal areas of work will be:

- The competitiveness of the UK tax system for insurance businesses.

- The continuing maintenance and operation of the UK regime for life taxation: Consulting members and making representations, under the management of the Assistant Director Taxation, to make sure that industry views are articulated and are influential. In addition to keep members informed and involved in this lobbying process.

- The reform of the system of taxing Life insurance business.

- Such work as may be necessary in the area of the taxation of general and life insurance including product taxation.

- As appropriate, international discussions, especially meetings of the European-wide insurance body in Brussels, focusing on European initiatives.

- To keep informed of developments in both general and life insurance markets, particularly with regard to the business and regulatory factors driving these markets and their impact on taxation.

- Any other duties as may reasonably be required by the ABI.

The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

- be a graduate with strong analytical skills.

- experience of policy development and the influencing of UK Government and/or European Commission policy.

- a good understanding of the UK tax system and UK tax policy, and ideally with knowledge or previous experience of the financial services industry.

- the ability to write articulately at different levels of detail to ABI members, senior ABI management and the wider policy community.

- the ability to quickly build strong relationships and gain credibility with a wide range of stakeholders in industry, Government and other relevant parties is necessary in order to facilitate ongoing dialogue with internal and external contacts.

- the ability to prioritise and manage a complex workload.

- reliability under pressure, as well as flexibility and initiative.

- willingness to work on a portfolio of topics to augment the resources of the Financial Regulation and Taxation Department, and be an effective team member, as well as a willingness to become involved with other ABI priorities.

The successful candidate will most likely be currently working in a. one of the accountancy firms specialising in tax policy clients, b. an insurance company and is involved in tax policy work, or c. involved in tax policy in the Government (HMRC or Treasury)
